"A painting of a shepherd boy to be reproduced as a lithograph ushered in a whole new
direction to my journey as an artist in ways I would never have imagined"
Mr. Cliff Snider, the vice-president of sales at the printing company had for years
been venturing toward his lifelong calling as Santa Claus himself.
He said my work was reminiscent of N. C. Wyeth, the famed artist and
illustrator whose work we both admire.
The bearded gentleman provided me with images I could work from and 'The Gift' became the first of seven paintings along with signed and numbered lithographs which debuted at the Holiday Market at the Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina, along with other artists who capture the likeness and spirit of this very special Cliff Kringle.
Over the next fifteen years, Santa and I would collaborate on ideas for the next image. Not only am I inspired by his authenticity, kindness, humility, and devotion to his faith in Christ Jesus, but also his magnificent wardrobe created by his seamstress, Mrs. Eva Rae Clark, a retired Home Economics teacher.
A beautiful green velvet robe with red satin lining and trimmed with fur from a repurposed raccoon coat found it's way into several paintings donning a shepherd-like figure. Santa Cliff rescued from his attic a quilt pieced by his grandmother and great-grandmother and became his 'coat of many colors' - his favorite story from the Bible.
It has been my caring intent to create images infused with metaphor, symbolism, spirituality, and a message of hope and peace that collectors would want to display throughout the years.
