Pursuing Emotions in Color

I struggled with my purpose most of my life. When I graduated from high school in Moscow I didn’t know what’s next. After relocating to the US, I began taking art classes when my son was born. Although I had a business degree I felt a huge disconnect between this profession and my soul. I couldn’t imagine living in some office space, performing tasks and crunching numbers. I had a different personality and a different calling.

Introverted and without a clear direction, I chose going to art schools to fill in the gap I felt inside me. I found my gift from the deepest emotional pain. Loneliness. Abandonment. Fear. Art helped me survive…

Over the years I developed a unique approach to painting & drawing, combining the female figure with beautiful
hues. Pursuing emotions in color, I decided to focus on what made me happy. Painting.

My figurative realism painting in oils and colored pencil is a personal exploration of the interior life of women. We all have the public self and the private self, we often don’t reveal our inner life to others, and this is exactly what I paint. In color, figure and symbols, I explore a relationship between the perceived beauty and beauty inside us, between presence and absence, loneliness and solitude. I investigate my
understanding of identity and feelings of loss, love, and hope.

Today I believe that ART means emotional healing and sharing. It’s the universal language to connect and unify us. My message is simple. DO WHAT YOU LOVE! Go deep inside yourself to explore what makes you fulfilled and excited regardless circumstances, approval or outcome. Take action by writing out your thoughts and emotions regularly. Paint them. Share them. Do what makes you happy.
And I’ll continue sharing my art with you because you’re awesome!

Melancholy in Gold

I paint to respond to the emotion I have at the moment. “Melancholy in Gold” is about feelings of loneliness and sadness. When I met this girl, she mirrored those feelings back at me. And while she looked OK on the outside, I saw the disconnect and loneliness inside her. To create a visual story I used just two colors – black and gold that I think convey feelings of sadness.

I designed the floral background to show that even dark emotions can be just as beautiful as the model. I borrowed this royal, black-gold color scheme from Spanish art. I love to travel and now I understand that the floral motive of the background comes from my trip to Japan. There are birds in the background. They change color from dark to light to symbolize hope.

Invisible: frosted past

This painting shows my desire to innovate through imagery and to communicate through color. I removed most of the original color from my reference leaving a shell of the figure overlaying the floral pattern. I love wall patterns in Venice and I always take lots of pictures of art objects and architecture once I’m there. The original pattern hue was red-white, but I wanted to create a painting reminiscent of frost we often see on windows during winter. I think this baby blue communicates feelings of subtle melancholy. This figurative painting is about feeling invisible. Therefore we neither see the model’s face, nor her body fully as she melts into the frosted past.
