Set in a quiet location overlooking Kerikeri Inlet, The Carriage House is just 5 mins from restaurants, shops and the
historic sights of Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands.

You look over the Kerikeri Inlet with jetty for your boat or kayak or just take a walk to enjoy the reflections of moored yachts.

Central location for boating, fishing, sailing on the BayKerikeri in the Far North of NZ is popular with guests from USA and Europe escaping the northern Winter. Visit the first settlement buildings Stone Store Kerikeri and the riverside walk to Rainbow Falls.

It is a short walk to the Pa then to visit both the Stone Store and Kemp House.
Over the bridge Rewa’s Village and The Parrot Place. A longer riverside walk takes you to the Rainbow Falls.


Kerikeri is a 3 hour drive North of Auckland, and has an airport with a 40 minute flight time. Rental cars are available.
Kerikeri Inlet is in the North West part of the Bay of Islands, close to the attractions of Paihia and Waitangi.
The Carriage House is on the south shore of the Inlet.
Come to our self catering farmstay in the warm Bay of Islands New Zealand on a waterfront horse breeding farm.

Our horses work daily pulling vintage wagons, drays and gigs.
The 25 acre property grazes Clydesdale and Shire Heavy Horses and also some Piebald Gypsy Vanners.

The self-catering accommodation is in The Carriage House, offering sole occupancy for 2 – 4 persons in a self contained cottage with two bedrooms. A large comfortable living room with well appointed kitchen and all appliances ensure a comfortable stay.

You have the choice of staying at a weekly rental or a rate per day (minimum 2 nights).

There is plenty of interest on the farm, in Kerikeri, and exploring the Bay of Islands.

Even if you are not a horse person you can get away from the crowds and enjoy the open spaces of a small farm in a
waterfront location with views of the boats on the Kerikeri Inlet, Bay of Islands.
Bring your kayak and explore the Kerikeri Inlet from our jetty!
The Heavy Horses

1880 Brewers Dray from Lion Brewery

The Grey Shire Horses formerly worked for the LION BREWERY in NZ and we have the Brewers Dray built in 1886.

Shire Horses are an endangered species and we are the only breeders of the rare Grey Shires in the southern hemisphere.
Some are 18-19 Hands and when 5 years old they turn white. We have nine trained to pull waggons.

Clydesdale horses of 16-17 hands are the Scottish Heavy Horses and they pull a New Zealand Settlers Waggon or an 1880 Adelaide Express.
Even more interesting is the Gypsy Bow Waggon, a horse drawn caravan all beautifully carved and brightly painted. We are breeding black and white Irish Draft Gypsy horses to pull this as a Gypsy would. These are called Piebald when black and white.

Vacation Rental Apartment – The Carriage House Our Holiday House

is on the waterfront of the Bay of Islands, Kerikeri Inlet, North of New Zealand. We offer a self contained vacation rental home for your extended holiday. There are two ensuite bedrooms.

One with a large king size bed, which can be converted into two single beds. The other is a comfortable king size bedroom, with ensuite bathroom. There is also a fully equipped kitchen, large living room, laundry and indoor and outdoor dining options.

You will have sole use of the holiday rental house. Stay 7 nights for the price of 6.

Just 5 minutes away by car to the vibrant Kerikeri town centre. Enjoy The Packhouse Market on Saturday and Sunday and The Bay of Islands Farmers Market on Sunday. New World and Countdown supermarkets can be found in the centre of Kerikeri.

About The Carriage House

Your hosts Adrian and Sylvia Garrett welcome you to their Bay of Islands farm
where they breed rare heavy horses. Guests stay in the self contained luxury accommodation on the property.

Sylvia and Adrian Garrett come from England, but lived in New England, and in Australia, before moving to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.Adrian is a retired engineer and has restored several vintage cars which they take on tour and rallies.

The couple are also sailors and have a 35 foot sloop. Sylvia, previously a computer analyst-programmer, now enjoys gardening, reading and travel.
Their home is furnished with 18th century oak furniture. You will also be able to share their interest in preserving the rare breeds of heavy horses, the skills in driving them and the collection of 19th century horse drawn vehicles still in use.
