"Birth Of An Idea" series by Ida Ivanka Kubler, art installation at Salena Gallery, Brooklyn, New York

I had the pleasure of meeting Ida Ivanka Kubler a few years ago, she was creating these beautiful works of art out of silk cocoons and the idea was not only intriguing to me but it sparked a sense of deep contemplation within me. Cocoon the symbol of birth and creation.

A Chance to recreate something that at first glance is unattractive or repelling that transforms into one of the most beautiful creatures in nature.

I thought to myself about the relationship I had with my mother and the connection we all have to mother earth.

The Idea of giving birth to a living breathing creature is perhaps the greatest art of all?

We became friends and The New York Optimist was happy to have her as a featured artist.

Her current Exhibition The Birth Of an Idea is on View At Long Island University Brooklyn Campus at The Salena Gallery click on any text here for more information and directions.

Upon my visit to the Salena Gallery I surveyed the room carefully as I usually do to see who
I may strike up a brief conversation with and although there were many pretty professional people I chose to get  impressions from a group of children touring the gallery with their teacher to see what they thought of Ida's work. Some saw planets  the sun the stars, one said she could see the moon in one of Ida's artworks,

Pleased with their exuberant responses as I deem children as the ultimate critics I took one last long glance at the impressive body of work  and I was off to another art function.

Some Background On Ida Ivanka Kubler
And The Birth Of An Idea

As a child, Ida Ivanka Kubler helped her grandparents with the breeding of silk cocoons every summer season. Remembers the artist:

"That involved various responsibilities such as cutting off mulberry leaves from tree branches, repositioning slow-growing worms to different areas, and gathering cocoons from the small niches where they had been spun."
She continues:

"As kids, were very excited about the whole process. We were a jolly group of little helpers and our grandfather praised us for our labor. As a reward, at the end of the cocoon season, my grandfather gifted each of us with a beautiful silk dress!"

On creating jewelry from cocoons, the artist explains:

"I decided one summer to experiment with dissolving the tips of crayons in water and then dipping the cocoons in it. That sparked the idea of making cocoon jewelry for clients. I created the brooch (see below) before I started using the sculptured cocoon form for artwork."

The View Of a Patron and Supporter of Ida's work

My husband, Jan H Brown, and I were introduced to Ida by a friend of ours from New York Rotary.  We were so captivated by Ida's contemporary sculptural paintings that we hosted a Pop-Up gallery of her artworks at my husband's midtown Manhattan immigration law firm.

Salena Gallery Director Nancy Grove came to the Pop-Up for a one-on-one meeting with Ida and to view the artwork.
Thereafter, she kindly offered Ida an exhibition at The Salena Gallery to coincide with the opening of the academic school year. I told Ida that this would be a perfect fit: The Birth of An Idea at LIU, where ideas are birthed every day!

My husband and I acquired one of Ida's artworks that is now housed the law office's conference room.  Namely, The Birth of An Idea XXXIV (https://idaivankakubler.com/node/83).

As you may know from Ida's website, her Birth of An Idea series has been recognized by the Behring Institute for Medical Research as having a positive influence on public health. We could not agree more. We feel that these inspiring artworks of timeless beauty convey a message of hope and possibility at a time when such is sorely missing in the lives of many.
