"Ali’i Guard” Original Oil/linen panel 14" x 18” (Ali’i Beach Park, North Shore Oahu)
I derive my oil painting technique from the plein air school by painting from life whenever possible. I am also a passionate colorist! My approach values capturing initial impressions to keep my work fresh and exciting. I am drawn to the dramatic, the unusual, and a unique point of view in my subject matter.
In my artistic process, I seek out high levels of contrast, intriguing shadows, and dark tones to complement the lights. I am particularly fascinated by juicy and interesting colors that allow me to interpret my subjects in a vibrant way. With every brushstroke, I strive to create an effortless and dynamic composition that captures the essence of the scene.
Engaging viewers is a crucial aspect of my work. Through my interpretation and passion for the subject, I aim to elicit a fresh perspective, even for those who may have previously visited the scene. I want my paintings to evoke a sense of discovery, encouraging viewers to see something new and captivating in familiar surroundings.
By embracing the plein air technique and my love for bold colors, my artwork becomes a visual representation of my experiences and emotions. Through each stroke, I aim to bring the scene to life and invite viewers to share in the joy and excitement I feel when creating my art.
Thank you for taking the time to explore my artistic journey. I hope that my paintings inspire and captivate, leaving a lasting impression on all who encounter them.

Susie Y. Anderson Fine Paintings - Artist’s Bio
Susie Y. Anderson is recognized by many as an accomplished "Pacific Colorist," and is celebrated for her unique impressionistic style. As an avid oil painter, she devotes herself to her craft, finding particular joy in plein air painting, capturing the beauty of nature directly from the outdoors.
As an acclaimed artist specializing in maritime and landscapes scenes, Susie draws inspiration from a diverse range of settings. From the awe-inspiring seascapes and landscapes of her home in Hawaii to the captivating play of light and color in the sprawling farmlands and snow-covered mountains of Park City, Utah, and beyond. Susie's art reflects the beauty and grandeur of nature far and wide.
One of the aspects that sets Anderson apart is her love for plein air painting. By immersing herself in the great outdoors, she is able to connect with nature on a profound level. This direct interaction with her surroundings allows her to capture the essence and beauty of the natural world in her artwork. Anderson's plein air paintings transport the viewer to the very moment in which they were created.
However, the choice to paint en plein air is not without its challenges. The ever-changing elements present a constant source of inspiration and difficulty. Anderson must adapt to the shifting light, weather conditions, and even the occasional curious passerby. Yet, it is precisely these obstacles that fuel her creativity and push her artistic boundaries. Each stroke of the brush becomes a testament to her perseverance and dedication, as she strives to capture the true essence of the scene before her.
Susie was honored to be elected Signature Member in the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) in 2020, and is known for her exceptional talent in capturing the unique beauty of the ocean. She is a Founding Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of Hawaii (PAPOH), showcasing her expertise in plein air painting, and a respected member of the Oil Painters of America (OPA), further solidifying her reputation in the art community. Her remarkable artworks can be found in prominent private and corporate collections worldwide.
Susie moved to Hawaii in 1969 and is a graduate of the University of Southern California holding degrees in fine arts and medical illustration. She worked for the University of Hawaii School of Medicine as a medical illustrator and graphic designer for 14 years, and then formed her own litigation graphics company, Visually Speaking Inc., before becoming a full-time, professional fine artist. Susie is represented by Nohea Gallery Kahala, Sunshine Arts in Waikiki and Kaneohe, and Kai Ku Hale in Haleiwa. She was an owner/member of the Gallery at Ward Centre for fourteen years until its closing in May 2015.

“Quick Bite Aloha Friday” History
During the onset of the 2020 pandemic, individuals worldwide experienced immense fear, anxiety, and social isolation. In response to these challenges, my husband and I launched the “Quick Bite Aloha Friday” project. Our main objective was to uplift spirits and foster a sense of connectedness among people.
Every Friday, we eagerly share a captivating original painting accompanied by an inspiring quote. We also take the opportunity to delve into the often fascinating and little-known short history, culture, and backstory behind the artwork. This unique combination of art, inspiration, and education has resonated with our audience, leading to numerous positive responses.
What began as a simple project to offer a momentary diversion during uncertain times has evolved into something far beyond our initial expectations. The overwhelming support and encouragement from our followers have inspired us to continue this adventure. We are now entering our fourth year of the "Quick Bite Aloha Friday" initiative and are humbled by the impact it has had.
To stay well-informed and engaged, we cordially invite you to visit my website and subscribe to receive our aptly named "Quick Bite Aloha Friday,” posts directly to your inbox every Friday. Furthermore, we encourage you to delve into our archive of past newsletters, which contain enlightening short stories about Hawaii and other destinations.

Why Aloha Friday?
In the vibrant islands of Hawaii, the tradition of Aloha Friday has stood the test of time. Originating in the 1960s, this revered tradition was officially established by the garment industry as a way to promote the wearing of Aloha shirts and muumuus on Fridays. It was a means to encourage a more relaxed and casual atmosphere, symbolizing the anticipation of the leisure and enjoyment that would follow over the weekend. Today Aloha Friday serves as a gentle reminder to pause, take a deep breath, and embrace the lighter side of existence.
In line with this spirit, our "Quick Bite Aloha Friday" posts aim to be a small reminder of the tranquility, joy, and natural wonders that surround us. Through these posts, we hope to uplift your spirits and provide a momentary escape from the rigors of daily life.
