ROADWAYS
Locations Collection: Roadways A series of paintings featuring roads going through various areas of the United States that are meaningful to me. My hope is that you feel a sense of place and recognition, even if you haven’t personally been there.
Davenport Evening 1
24H x 32W”
Davenport, California is a small town that I have loved for many years, including the Road House, a former stage coach stop, now a Bistro and Hotel. I painted this evening view as one drives on Highway #1 N, going through the town of Davenport; the arrow is a metaphor—where are we going next?
This painting has won a number of awards, and in juried exhibitions, including as the poster for the Pacific Art League’s (Palo Alto) 99th year Celebration, and currently in the San Diego Museum of Art “Highlights of the Artist Guild” exhibition through March 9, 2025.
Sale price: $5650.00

Roadhouse Evening, 2021
24W x 32H”
Another view of Davenport, California, with close up of the iconic Roadhouse B&B, which originally was a stagecoach venue. This moody painting glows with light at dusk, a time which means both sadness and an inner calm to me.

SANTA CRUZ, VAN NESS AVENUE
16W x 20H
Private Collection
One of my first “Location” paintings, this is the street I live on in Santa Cruz, California.
The aerial perspective shows the street, including my blue car parked in front of my house, several well known buildings, and goes all the way across Monterey Bay, showing the outline of Moss Landing, a favorite tourist spot. The colors and composition are inspired by the work of Richard Diebenkorn. This painting is on display at the R.Blitzer Gallery, Santa Cruz.
Currently, not for sale.

Downtown Santa Cruz
18H x 24W”
This iconic painting of Downtown Santa Cruz shows several streets that merge towards downtown Santa Cruz, California, was a technical and geometric challenge, especially in the angles of the buildings, the crosswalks and the perspective. I painted the town clock and the triangle building in candy colors, and also included a glimpse of the famous Santa Cruz Boardwalk roller coaster in the background. This was used as a poster by the Santa Cruz Visitors’ Bureau and has been one of my most sold prints, including through local stores.

Red Car Tacqueria III
18”H x 24”W
This vibrant and lively acrylic painting that captures a street scene in vivid detail. The central focus of the artwork is a mustard-yellow building with signs advertising a taqueria and post-Covid welcoming messages. In the foreground, a bright red car stands out against the pale blue sky and light road surface, adding to the energetic atmosphere of the piece. Behind the building, a row of tall, slender trees creates a surreal barrier between the urban setting and the distant horizon of the sea and sky, adding depth and dimension to the composition. The overall style is expressive and somewhat impressionistic, with visible brushstrokes that add texture to the various elements within the scene. The vibrant color palette and skillful capture of light, shadow, and reflections make this artwork a captivating and visually striking piece.
Deliberate use of color and contrast evokes a serene yet busy atmosphere, imbuing the scene with feelings of peace, yet movement. Through this artwork, Brown captures a moment that resonates universally, inviting us to contemplate the complexities of our time. Juried into Pacific Grove Gallery exhibit through Dec. 2024.

Artist Statement
I am a colorist who blends reality and imagination; not an exact realist.
I’m known for my paintings of Santa Cruz County, CA, but I don't paint coastal or beach scenes because I feel they are over represented. My work brings new life to subjects often thought of as mundane, such as "just a street." I choose to show places that are rarely, if ever, seen in paintings and to celebrate little known aspects of well known places.
In my street scenes and similar "Location" series of paintings I have found a love of solving geometry to create a sense of place, mood, and emotion; emphasizing light, shadows and time of day.
Due to the architecture, aerial perspective and inclusion of portraits and figures, my “Roadways” and “Today’s World” series are especially complex and challenging, some of which involve viewers in scenes of effects of the pandemic. I’ve been told that viewers enjoy the depth and details in these complex paintings, and get more out of them each time they are seen.
In my "Hidden Valley" series I offer various interpretations of a glimpse of a valley that is only briefly seen; giving to my viewers scenes of peaceful respite, deep emotion and serenity.
Instead of giving all the answers, my paintings engage the viewer to ask themselves questions, such as where a road may lead.
My paintings evoke a sense of recognition, nostalgia, or deja vu, whether or not someone has actually been to these places.
"Davenport Evening" will be on view at the

BIO
Award-winning California artist Susan Brown grew up with European parents who introduced her to art at an early age. Brown painted and drew from childhood, winning a state-wide award when she was twelve. After retiring in 2016 from technology/biotech, she devoted herself to her painting career. Highlights include invitation to the Florence Biennial 2025, San Diego Museum of Art New Gallery Exhibition, 2024-25, Barnes Foundation Scholarship, 2024, American Women Artist Award, 2023, Artist Residency, Vallauris, France, 2022, and Important World Artists VI (one of 10 artists sponsored to be in the 2024 volume VI). Her painting, “Davenport Evening,” has been accepted into the San Diego Museum of Art New Gallery Exhibition, November, 2024-March 9, 2025.
Brown’s background as a watercolor artist provided her the experience in use of light, shadow and negative space, and how to maintain freshness in her painting. She continued her art passion and education by studying acrylic, oil, figure drawing, and portraiture, including at the Pacific Art League, Santa Cruz Art League, College of San Mateo, UC Santa Cruz, and through independent workshops.
Her influences include Richard Diebenkorn, Alice Neel, Matisse and John Singer Sargent. Her work has been shown in international and US galleries, juried exhibitions, is in private collections, and sold through the Homeless Garden Project Store, Santa Cruz, where she donates 50% of all sales. Susan teaches throughout California, and at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico.
Many of her well known paintings give life to lesser known places, such as “just a street.” Her Santa Cruz County paintings are not typical “coastal scenes;”such as her acrylic painting, "Davenport Evening," which poses questions for the viewer; asking where the road may lead, and evoking a sense of nostalgia or deja vu, whether or not one has actually been there.

Self in Door
9”Wx11”H
"Self in Door" invites you into a vivid and lively interior scene, capturing a moment that feels both personal and universal. At the heart of the composition is a captivating green armchair, positioned prominently in the room, beckoning with its rich color and promise of comfort.
The surroundings are equally vibrant, with one wall painted a cheerful yellow and another a fresh green,
creating an inviting atmosphere filled with energy.
Your eye is drawn to the large windows on the left, where the greenery outside offers a glimpse of nature and adds a touch of serenity to the room. In the background, there's a person in blue, partially obscured by an open door, which introduces an intriguing narrative layer to the artwork. This subtle human presence adds a hint of mystery and invites you to ponder who they might be and what story they bring to the space.
Through the use of acrylics, the work embraces rich colors and bold contrasts, achieving an impressive sense of depth and warmth. It's more than just a depiction of a room; it's a contemplation of memory and emotion, inspired by a quiet moment of remembrance—standing in a doorway and reflecting on things past.
