"Ruumy’s Tavern"
Bringing a New Meaning To

“Comfort Food”

Picture

Googles Definition :
com·fort food
ˈkəmfərt fo͞od/
noun
  1. food that provides consolation or a feeling of well-being, typically any with a high sugar or other carbohydrate content and associated with childhood or home cooking.

My definition of comfort food is very close to Google’s definition it is not only a meal but a  state of mind. I think everyone has one. Is it macaroni and cheese the homemade kind or the out of the box Kraft Variety? Maybe it’s pizza or a cheeseburger?  When I was a youngster and came home from school mom would sometimes set me up with a chicken TV Dinner just in time for the monster hour or my favorite cartoons. I remember these times like it was yesterday.

The other night I was invited to have dinner with a few other writers at a lovely restaurant right in the heart of the Theater District named Ruumy’s Tavern.  Executive Chef Matthew Sadownick has taken the concept of Comfort food  to a whole new level and added a number of magical ingredients to a menu that is guaranteed to please all tastes.

With a menu that serves dishes named Grandma  Ruumy's Matzo Ball Soup and Mac and Cheese and Murry's Cheese, therapy comes in the form of food! Based on the other writers reactions to the food that was coming our way  - reactions being mmmmms and ahhhhs I say bring on the therapy Doc@!

We started the festivities with Grandma Ruumy’s Matzo Ball Soup truly a heartwarming  experience.
Fiollowed by  Ruumy’s Chicken Liver Mousse & House Pickles,
Spring Salad -  Strawberry, fetta, balsamic,  and a very wonderful version of  Mac & Cheese. Served on smaller plates each dish complimented the next perfectly and was also pai9red with the perfect wine to enhnce the flavor even further.

The Second course came next and brought a new level of complexity to the table. This word sparked an interesting conversation between the writers and Chef Mathew.

There was some debate over the idea of whether this food could in fact be classified as comfort food as the combination of herbs spices and main ingredients were simple enough or was the final presentation and flavor to complex to be named comfort food Chef Mathew cleared this up for us with a somewhat philisophical answer.

Food Like life is both complicated and simple.  A very Budhist approach indeed and the asian influence became apparent in his choice of serving refreshing clever  Sake cocktails along with a really nice selection of wines and Craft Beers.

The selections of flatbreads served with  the next course brought the culinary pallette to the next level.
Here is where the word complicated came into play.

Grilled Cauliflower
Red wine current reduction, parmesan.

Shiitake & Portobello
Fontina, salsa verde.

Four Cheese
Lardo, cured egg yolk.

Raven & Boar Ham
Swiss-black pepper crème fraiche.

Red wine current reduction,  Fontina Cheese, cured egg yolk,
The flavor of fresh vegetables and herbs cooked with the knowledge of how these ingredients work together and compliment each other inspires me to learn more about the art of cooking. Really fantastic delicious food that might be seen as simple.
Just cheese vegetables and flat bread right?  Not quite Watson it is the diaboliquely clever addition of wine reductions cured egg yolks,
crème fraiche:  a type of thick cream made from heavy cream with the addition of buttermilk, sour cream, or yogurt paired with Raven Boar Ham easily one of my favorite parts of this dining experience.

Is it possible to get excited about vegetables?
Chef Mathew wants to get people as excited about vegetables as they are about qa steak or a lobster!
With this upcoming course of Vegetables I can see myself going vegetarian for maybe a month with these kind of dishes
Chef Mathew serves at Ruumy's Tavern, but luckily his diverse menu offers a healthy selection of fresh seafood catches and farm fresh meats there maybe no need to.

The final course  - Large Plates on the menu but served in smaller portions for this writers feast brought together this menu and truly confirmed the idea of comfort food, although im not sure that is the only word I would use to describe Chef Mathews Menu, I might use words like inspired innovative and downright orgasmic. l-)

Ricotta Cavatelli With Spring Lamb Ragu

Steak Frites
Bearnaise, herb fries.

Ruumy’s Burger
