My paintings capture an evidence of my presence and traces of humanity in my spaces. In New York we talk about, seek out, and celebrate space in an obsessive and desperate way.
I explore the intimate trails I carve through my domestic worlds and the often fickle notion of what home is. I want the disjointed nature of the spaces, whether within one canvas or across two, to emphasize that despite the celebration of my sacred rooms, whether home, studio, or office, apprehension lurks in anticipation of the chaos of the exterior world.
In addition to exploring my spaces and intimate actions within them, I have been interested in revealing private moments of instability. My new body of paintings freeze time in moments of transition, as hand washed clothing dries, as I become undressed, and as my behavior hovers between the childish and mature, stuck between fantasies of superheroes and sex. The Laundry line of underwear shows moments of maturity, awkwardly grabbing at confidence and sexuality, combined with an adolescent reminiscing of childish play. Cleaning something with my hands, like lacey underwear or a silky shirt, brings almost more ownership over the garment and what it represents then wearing it.
Through care, costume becomes clothing— it becomes routine. I combine working from direct observation, drawings, memory, and photographs. Painting from life has led to more complex and engaged experience, and increased the abstraction, as little moments of color and shape build up to create a vibrating final experience. The process of painting becomes a part of the final image, as layers of decisions are revealed between firm final moments.
