With over two decades of professional experience, Nanette Fluhr has created paintings that
hang in public and private and collections worldwide, garnering her prestigious recognition.

Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern (MEAM) in
Barcelona, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, the
Eisele Gallery of Fine Art, the Hutchins Gallery at C.W. Post College, the National Arts Club, the
Salmagundi Club, and the University of Connecticut Gallery, among many others.

A highlight of Nanette’s career was having three of her works selected for a historic presentation
of American painting, Contemporary American Realism, which toured national museums in
China including the Beijing World Art Museum, Dalain Modern Museum, Tianjin Art Museum,
Hubel Provincial Museum, Zhejiang Provincial Museum and the Shanghai Art Museum.

She has received honors and awards from institutions such as the Art Renewal Center, Artist’s
Magazine, the Catherine Lorilland Wolfe Art Club, the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, the
Portrait Society of America, and the School of Visual Arts.

Nanette graduated from Rutgers University in 1987 and then went on to earn her BFA with
Honors from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where
she received the Rhodes FamilyAward for Outstanding Achievement.

There she met John Frederick Murray, who taught her
drawing, painting and picture making skills gleaned from the techniques of the Old Masters.
During this time Nanette became a registered copyist with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York, where she painted museum-quality replicas of works by Lawrence, Le Brun,
Rembrandt, Rubens, Velazquez and Van Dyke.

As a faculty member of the Art League of Long Island, Nanette shares her extensive knowledge
of traditional realism. She is a sought after workshop instructor for schools such as the Teaching
Studios of Art, where she taught Master Copy, and is currently visiting faculty. In partnership
with Craftsy.com Nanette taught a 7 episode online video class, Classic Children’s Portraits in
Oil. She has also worked with Rosemary Brushes and Co. to create two signature brush sets.

"The people of Long Island have a little known "jewel in their midst." I speak of Mrs. Nanette Fluhr, "Master Classic Portraiture" of Dix Hills, N.Y. Mrs Fluhr's uncompromising classic style is unrivaled in both technique and composition.

"I am no novice" to the art community. Having a 40 year collection, as well as, being the recipient of two Smithsonian Awards in 1967 and 1969 I feel completely confident in stating that Nanette Fluhr is one of the finest Portrait Artists in the world. In 1998 Mrs. Fluhr completed a life size portrait of my wife, Cher. Few times in life does one's purchase have such a lasting sense of joy and beauty. I am looking forward to my daughter's portrait." –Bob Podesta

Having a portrait painted is a very special journey for both the artist and the subject. I strive to create a beautiful painting that not only attains a remarkable likeness but also captures the true spirit of my subject. My goal is to create an heirloom quality
painting that will be treasured by future generations.

Initially, I will meet with the client to get acquainted at either my studio or the subject's home, office or other location. At this initial meeting we will discuss the type of portrait desired and determine the size, scope, and location where the painting with be displayed. Each individual has a unique quality that will be interpreted through the pose, clothing, setting, lighting and expression selected for the portrait. The next step is the photography session where a variety of poses and lighting combinations will be explored.

Ideally, I prefer to work from life; however, I understand clients time restraints do not always make this possible. Therefore I tend to work from a combination of photographs and life, selecting and emphasizing what best
 expresses my subject's unique essence.

In my studio, I use the photographs to make decisions about the preferred pose and expression of the portrait. Numerous color studies are prepared to determine the composition and color harmony for the final portrait. I will present a small compositional color study to enable you to appreciate a sense of what the finished portrait will look like. After the study is approved, I will paint a head study from life to record the subtle nuances of skin tones and hair, which cannot be accurately captured by color photography. On occasion, a second photography session may be necessary. To ensure your satisfaction the client is involved in every step during this process.

I then paint the oil portrait in my studio working from these references. Each portrait is painted on fine Belgian linen canvas using the highest quality materials available to ensure permanence. The painting will then be delivered for years of pleasurable viewing.

If the client wishes, I will participate in selecting an appropriate frame.

Thank you for your interest in having your portrait painted. Please contact me directly to discuss the portrait you envision. I look forward to creating a timeless work of art for you or your institution.
