Dad Makes Camping Breakfast. My dad used to take us to a provincial park
in Southern Ontario where I grew up and make breakfast on a Coleman stove. Decades later,
my cousin Ian’s wife posted a photo of the breakfast he made his kids on a Coleman stove.
She gave me permission to use her photo as a reference.
Here you see the worn out label of the ‘..ol man’ stove. Professionally framed in light wood.
17” x 25” Oil on MDF board.

What I paint and why I love it!
I paint about family and life as revealed to us, and by us, by our homes and gardens and through the foods we prepare.
These aspects, and the work we do, define us. I love bright, harmonious colors, food and what it means to us, gardens and beauty.
Since covid we seem to spend more time living and working at home.
And I hope we have a heightened understanding of how important our living and working environments are to us.
There is such a thing as beauty, and it is important. Color is important.
How your home makes you feel is important. Family, however it is defined, is important.
Your environment should help you contribute to the betterment of the world, whatever you do.
I hope my art will contribute to the beauty and enjoyment of your home and work environment.

A Vegetarian Prepares to Dine Alone.
During covid my nephew was stuck for more than a year,
alone in Berlin - a ten-hour time difference from friends and family. And yet, he made a great
dinner and set a nice table for himself. But do you see the crumpled napkin on the bottom?
That’s the tension of being alone.
16” x 20” x 1.5”. Painted all around the canvas. Oil on canvas.

Paintings that include food but are about so much more
I am a good cook and I come from a family of good cooks. Although I studied food science and
love good food, food means so much more to me. It means the swirl of conversation with family,
bouncing around the kitchen with my brother and sisters, teasing and remembering. The food
we cook defines us, our history and location. All the food pictured comes from my kitchen or that
of my relatives; it isn’t restaurant food.

Salvadore’s Fish. The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg Florida exhibits an early painting by
Salvadore Dali. This is his composition. To honor him, I commissioned Allison LeBaron of
Gainesville Florida to make a pottery bowl.
I showed my local grocery fishmonger a photo of
Dali’s painting and he obtained two whole fish that looked similar to the ones in Dali’s painting.
Since the fish were not eviscerated, I knew they would start to smell as soon as they thawed.
I set up all the elements in the grocery store’s small coffee shop and painted quickly while people
looked over my shoulder. I changed the fish into a portrait of Dali and his stern wife Gaia. I put
cherries in Dali’s mouth, to form his moustache, because so many of Dali’s paintings included
cherries. 16” x 20” x 1.5”. Painted all around the canvas. Oil on canvas.

First Tomato from the Garden.
Here we see a tomato as a jewel in a crown of basil. This painting in
your kitchen will make you remember a wonderful summer day all year round. The photo reference
used was my brother David's actual first tomato and basil from his garden in Ottawa. 12” x 12” x 1.5”.

Making Mom’s Tomato Sauce.
These are the ingredients for my mom’s tomato sauce, flying into
the pot as she quickly cooked. She always put a dram or two of red vermouth in her sauce, and
while she was at it, made a Manhattan for herself. 18” x 36” x 0.5”. unframed. Oil on canvas.

Nothing like the zing of flowers!
I love the big bold colors and shapes of canna lilies and irises. I grow irises in my garden
because they are easy for a lazy gardener like me. Canna lily bulbs require more care than I
can manage so I find them in the public gardens near Niagara Falls. The leaves of canna lilies
are nearly as exciting as the flowers.

Price and Quality
When pricing my paintings, I consider size, time and that I want it to sell! I want you to be happy
to have bought a well-made piece of original art at a good price. I live in Western New York,
near the Canadian border and my prices are in keeping with my peer artists. That often means
my prices are lower than gallery prices. Good! Shipping will be extra.
To create these pieces, I use pro-quality oil paints on professional quality canvas. Most
paintings are on a 1.5” thick canvas and painted all around. As you move around the room the
painting draws you in. There is no need to frame paintings on thick canvas when the sides are
painted. Each piece is properly dried, then varnished, making a lasting work of art.

I picked a sun-warmed dinner from my daughter’s garden
I started gardening with my daughter when she was about 8 yrs old and she quickly surpassed me.
She loves vegetable gardening, and her gardens burst with produce.
I picked these greens and tomatoes, took them in the kitchen wondering if I should eat them or paint them.
It was late afternoon, mid-July, so I painted, and then ate them. Painted at peak flavor!
Oil on canvas. 8" x 10" X 1.5". Sides painted in the background color.

Moody Tulips
These mauve tulips faded to the lightest pink at the top and yet the shadows were dark.
Surrounded by a cuff of pink wrapping, the effect was moody, yet light and eye-catching.

Michelle Marcotte – Art Resume
I studied art as a child in odd places in Windsor, Ontario, Canada - a nun's drawing studio, the
back of a hair salon, and then with the most dedicated high school teacher. At the University of
Windsor, I produced paintings, drawings, sculpture and studied art history.
But foods and nutrition were my major focus. I became a social scientist, and regulatory consultant.
I consulted for companies and governments and worked on an international environmental
treaty. While doing so, I have travelled to, and worked in, over 40 countries, spending
considerable time in the world's galleries.
In 2003 I moved from Ottawa Canada to Maryland, to marry an American scientist and started
painting again. In 2011, we moved to Niagara Falls, Canada where I transitioned to becoming a
full-time artist. We now live in Lewiston NY where I paint in my large studio. I believe the
elements of family life, my home and gardens and the work I have done, come out in my art.
I am an exhibiting member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, The Buffalo - Niagara Art
Association, and the Gainesville Florida Art Association. I am a Canadian-American. The
Canada Council on the Arts has deemed me to be a professional Canadian artist.

Michelle Marcotte is a writer too
Michelle wrote reports to international and domestic governments, corporations
and industry associations for decades. She now writes literature for children, teens and adults.
Michelle's books teach facts (such as history) and fancy (such as history as reported by Gnomes),
empathy (by caring for animals), healthy approaches to living (by appreciating different vegetables
and having fun exercising) and cautionary tales (such as how to avoid activities that result in visiting
the hospital emergency room).
Michelle thinks adults can have
fun books too - for example by learning how to walk in the rain while
not getting wet.
She is actively searching for publishers who want to share the fun of these books.
