Michal Barkai is an award-winning painter and photographer. She paints mostly in dry (soft) pastels and enjoys painting in her home studio and on location in local parks and gardens. Landscapes, florals, and the changing season are recurring themes in her representational artwork. The artist states, “whether sightseeing or exploring my own backyard, nature feeds an inner search and appreciation for serenity and peace."
Barkai, who was born and raised in Israel, is an IT professional turned artist and views herself as a “balanced left side/right side of the brain”, crediting her former career for her analytical and organizational skills and attention to detail.
Barkai exhibits locally. Her work was featured in national juried exhibitions at the Salmagundi club and the National Art Club in NYC, and the International Association of Pastel Societies in Albuquerque, NM. Her painting, Local Gossips, was awarded the Best in Painting category at the 2023 Gaelen juried show in NJ.
Barkai’s artwork was featured in several art publications, including Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Collector Magazine, Stone Voices Magazine, Still Point Arts Quarterly and Outdoor Painter.com.
Barkai is a distinguished signature member of the Pastel Society of New Jersey (PSNJ-DP) and has served as the society’s President from 2014-2022. She is an associate member of the Pastel Society of America, Allied Artists of America, Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and American Women Artists. Barkai is also a member of Studio Montclair Inc, the NJ Society of Plein Air Artists, the Livingston Arts Association, and the West Essex Art Association.

An IT professional by training, Barkai devotes her time now to painting in pastels and oil, and photography. She is inspired by waterscapes and the changing seasons and enjoys painting on location in local parks and gardens. Beauty, aesthetics, and harmony feed her inner search for serenity and peace.
Barkai’s work was featured in several magazines, including Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Collector Magazine, Plein Air Magazine, Still Point Arts Quarterly, Stone Voices Magazine and others. She is a Distinguished Signature member (PSNJ-DP) of the Pastel Society of New Jersey, of which she served as President from 2014-2022.
