Artist’s Statement

I first started painting with watercolors in a few college courses, but my artistic growth was suspended for several decades due to Army draft, career, marriage, and children. Since my retirement in 2009 I have been able to develop my abilities in painting with oils on canvas.
When I discovered abstract painting via a Des Moines Art Center class, I realized I had found my favorite mode of artistic expression. I love the freedom of playing with form, line, color, and texture to create vibrant paintings which are visually appealing to me and, hopefully, others.
My ideas for what to paint come largely from elements in the outdoors. That includes sky, land, rocks, trees, mountains, leaves, shadows, all of nature! Wherever I go I take cell phone photos for potential ideas for a painting.

In this phase of life I’ve found that painting with oil on canvas brings meaning and pleasure to my life. Having this year made Palm Springs, CA my home, I like my style and I don’t plan on holding back!

Michael is an artist whose work can be described as sensual, if not sexual, and turbulent in a busy world of forms and colors, much like what we experience daily--not chaotic, but urgent.  The work is noisy, bold, and makes us think of periods and artists, particularly from 20th Century art history.  The unfurling, unraveling, the twisting and interwovenness of nature, the inner and outer spaces and forms are inviting because we know those ideas. The color and tone make us work to find theses concepts.

Michael in this phase of his life has found that painting with oil brings meaning and pleasure to his life.  In Iowa and in Palm Springs, CA, he has developed his style and doesn't plan on holding back.
