The Artist
“Photographing from the open cockpit of our family’s vintage plane, wind in my face translates to batiks on silk, distilling the adventure into a moment of visual poetry. The expansive interplay of vistas becomes meditative prayers for the planet in my studio. From five-story draped sculptures to 14-inch wide silks, memories flow with layers of wax and dye in the calm of this ancient art form.”
Conveying breathtaking perspectives of space, earth, and deep sea is my life’s work, developed with leading experts in the fields of planetary science, coastal geology, and oceanography.
For a half century as an environmental activist artist my art communicates messages of conservation and stewardship. Large-scale oils painted on location help protect sacred landscapes. Aerial and satellite photography, maps, and charts inform explorations which reveal complex patterns, The artworks have elegant impact by virtue of scale, compelling design, and vibrant color.

Mary Edna has flown and photographed the entire East Coast and most of the West Coast of America, as well as several countries overseas.
Batik is a “dye-resist” process in which removable wax is applied to fabric, creating areas that will repel dye, while any unwaxed areas will absorb dye. This technique of dying textiles predates recorded history.
Mary Edna Fraser combines modern chemical Procion dyes, beeswax, and paraffin on silk to express a sense of place inherent in each scene. Her fascination with the distinctive features of various regions has led her to examine barrier islands, river deltas, mountains, glaciers, and threatened landscapes around the world.
She works from her own aerial photographs and memories of flight, gains technical precision as she examines maps and charts, and paints studies on location to develop potential color palettes for her batiks. Satellite and space imagery have further expanded her range of content.
Fraser brings a dramatic scale and complexity to batik; her art is unique to the ancient medium.
In 1994, Mary Edna installed the first one-woman and textile exhibition at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, featuring 70 batiks and monotypes. Fraser was named NASA Artist of the Year in 1995.
