An Inspirational Interview with Owner and Designer Of
"Makiivka Estate"
Janet Attard

Janet, Makiivka Estate and Farm Stay are in my opinion outstanding for a number of reasons.

Firstly the geographical terrain is a testament to nature's beauty.

Bordered by Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Glenn, Colusa, and Yolo counties.

You are located in some of the most supple and richest growth areas in the world,

TNYO: What brought you to this land of milk and honey?

Makiivka:  A job brought me to Northern California after Graduation from Georgetown University. My first job was at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore. I was paid to move to work for  Stanford Children's Hospital, Stanford, CA. After a couple years, I missed NYC. I moved back to work at Sloan Kettering, NYC. I again moved back to CA to get married and have three amazing sons! (also to Rollerblade all winter long)!!!!!!!!

I had a dream to purchase a remote piece of land beyond Napa suitable for a vineyard... it would be my quiet oasis.. I wanted to create, to write a book..I found a piece of baron land- I had a good feeling!  My family had always been in the floral and design business, my Grandparents owned a successful greenhouse business with a flower shop outside NYC. The desire to create and grow to be part of the land is in my blood. I asked my sons' to see the land, we said "yes"!

I named my farm Makiivka Estate after a town and orphanage in the Ukraine.  I sponsored two orphans from Ukraine. I wished to always remember those less fortunate. I wanted to always give back to the community....

I started with 11 acres of all brush and weeds...month by month and day by day i pulled weeds and transformed the land, first by building a house, then starting to put into the ground tree after tree....thousands of pounds of grass seed...a pool, gardens..tennis court....for weddings, receptions, healing events....gatherings

(gone through divorce, the "have to have thing", the stock market thing.
.i needed to find a farm, i wanted to be real and get back to the land of milk and honey!)

TNYO: Aesthetics - so important to me so glorious and life enhancing to the world. Without this extremely important element  we may be a society doomed to darkness  - Ha! Ooops sorry getting a little too deep, well without art in all its forms we may all be lost.
Your property and the estate itself is impeccable  - it takes vision to accomplish this.
Please tell us about your vision - how you changed coasts and how you ended up creating Makiiivka Estates'

Makiivka: I am creating my second book telling the story about the creation of my farm estate, a private oasis.

The next five to fifteen years will bring the creation of a vineyard managed by my son Jon who is now completing his PhD in Organic Chemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute outside of Boston. I will continue to create additional hardscape with all things stone. I will continue to create additional soft-scape.  I love green lush vegetation, olive, fruit trees and colorful greens.

I utilize the farm for small gatherings and family celebrations. During the next five to fifteen years I want my place to be a go to place for couples who seek a quiet place to retreat to beyond Napa in a beautiful getaway wine country, This private atmosphere is perfect to draw, write a book, explore, hike, explore and experience our serene landscape. We are a spiritual healing retreat, a corporate gathering place, a small wedding venue location.

My focus as a healthcare professional is on health and wellness.  I promote this with my atmosphere.....With the presence of a pool, hot tub and tennis court our farm atmosphere is suitable for rest and relaxation.   We offer healing services including therapeutic massage, facials, healing touch energy movement, card readings and intuitive coaching. We provide the backdrop, each guest will provide their own unique experience....

TNYO: What do you envision for the next 3 years - 5 years - 15 years.

The creation of this estate came from a dream and desire to create beauty. There were not resources nor a concrete plan when I first dreamt about and made a decision to purchase.  The power and passion to complete such a project came from a burning desire, passion and will to share my dream with others ...

This burning desire and vision to create is conveyed to the world via visiting my estate, planning
an escape or reading my book...

Tunnel Vision, a focused life by Jan Attard
