STATEMENT

My paintings remind me that beauty and harmony are always here. They depict what I have seen again and again, in unexpected places and all around, as I wander through urban streets: when the Sun's rays burst through the fog and shine upon exterior balconies and fire escapes. . . it's magic! Exquisite patterns of light and shadow suddenly blossom from the drab surroundings. Clothing drying in the breezes, affixed to ironwork and windows, add surprising bursts of color and design that enliven the buildings and bring warm thoughts of the people living within.

During my contemplation I forget that the city, splendid in so many ways, also can be gritty and cold. World unrest, often tugging at the emotions and adding its own dark layer of anxiety and hopelessness, fades from my mind.

This magic - these special moments in time when the ephemeral joins with the physical - are captured in my artworks, each one unique and real. I am uplifted when I remember, because this is what I know for certain: even when the clouds seem permanently fixed in place, their presence is temporary. The Sun always comes out again, and the world seems renewed and full of hope.

BIO

After growing up in Illinois, Cook attended Mississippi University for Women, receiving a BS in biology and a BFA in drawing and painting. After graduating with an MFA from the California College of the Arts in Oakland (drawing, with a specialization in scientific illustration), she became the staff Artist/Photographer for the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, a position she held for sixteen years.
Cook also worked with researchers at the forefront of scientific discoveries: most notably, locating planets outside our solar system. This resulted in worldwide publication of Cook’s astronomical images in books, periodicals, documentaries, and press releases by Astronomy, BBC Television, CNN, The Discovery Channel, Japan Public Television, NASA, Newsweek, Scientific American, Time, and US News & World Report (a partial list). Cook also has been featured on ABC7 News (KGO) and in USA Today.

In 2010, Cook shifted direction toward painting and now focuses on the urban environment of the San Francisco Bay Area. Career highlights include solo exhibitions at the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka, CA and the Peninsula Museum of Art in Burlingame, CA (2020). In 2020 and 2023 the de Young Museum included her paintings in its de Young Open exhibits in San Francisco.

Among Cook's numerous awards is the Grand Prize in Lifting the Sky, the 2021 national exhibition of American Women Artists. More recent achievements include First Place, (Landscape Category) in the Art Renewal Center's 17th International ARC Salon Competition, the American Art Collector Award for Excellence in the 19th Annual International Juried Exhibition of the International Guild of Realism, and Best Acrylic in PleinAir Magazine's 14th Annual PleinAir Salon Art Competition.

Cook is a 2016 grant recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Her artwork is in the permanent collections of the City and County of San Francisco and Imagery Estate Winery, the largest single-theme art collection (wine labels) in the world.
