Artist's Statement

“It has taken 50 years for me to understand one fundamental truth about all art: people get out of art what they bring to it.

No matter what I’m trying to “say” with a piece, it will always be perceived through the life-lens of the observer.

Everything they have ever seen or done has created a filter through which they now experience life–and art. Each person experiences the work differently, and it is as though my art–ANY art–can create a door where no door had been. And if the art resonates through the life-lens of the viewer, the door will open. That door leads not out to some alien place but inward to “self.”

When a person is fortunate enough to find a resonant piece of art and to open that unique door, there is no end to what they can learn about themselves.”

Artist's Biography

Lawrence started selling his work in fine galleries in 1970 and became a full-time professional artist in 1979. He has mounted over 50 one-man shows in the intervening years.

His work is represented in the permanent collections of noted museums and corporations and in thousands of private collections worldwide, and he accepted coveted invitations to show in the Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy in 2021 and 2023.

Lawrence has been active in the world of digital art since the 1980's when he illustrated the very first children’s book created in color on a computer and now, at age 76, he offers a rare voice of experience and maturity in the burgeoning genre of NFTs.

He is a cryptoart OG (2018) and was a key member of the group responsible for creating the 10% industry-standard for royalty payments on NFT secondary sales.

Lawrence sums up his life with these few words: "I have known love and loss in near equal measure. I am interested in almost everything, but I have a special fondness for language and subatomic physics."
