In my over 35 years of art making, although format and media change, my own experiences as a woman and how that is viewed both from outside in and inside out, has been the central theme. As my perspective has changed over time, so have the materials. The earliest ceramic sculpture from the late 80’ s and 90’s reference European decorative porcelains to comment on the objectification of the female body/vessel. (two of these pieces are in the permanent collection of the Met). These sculptures use the vessel as a metaphor of female/container and evolved to into the next body of work which is directly figurative. This time the format is the bust, made from pristine porcelain, manipulated, and formed in an intentionally "unpristine" ways. They are anonymous. The portraits painted the surface are of women between the ages of 45 and 85 that I photographed. The other painted imagery, which interacts abstractly with the form, produce suggestive narratives on aging, desire, fragility, emptiness, stages of life, and the passage of time.
The paintings are the next evolution in developing more narrative work. The pandemic internalized the dialog and led me to explore my own connection to motherhood and relationships. This format allows me to have even more control of the point of view in cinematic way. The imagery is still layered as is the painted surface and now color and light play a large role in the story.
