Interview With Artist
Nicolae Ene
After many years of exploring the art world I have come across many fantastic works of art.
The discovery of new and exciting art and artists has been a favorite pastime and always fills my heart and soul
With excitement and great enthusiasm.
A few years back I met Max Laniado at his gallery and we have been friends ever since.
He has a knack for discovering and finding what I consider to be some of the finest quality living artists Today.
Among the many artists Max represents, one in particular stands out in my mind after having seen his work exhibited at
"The Max Laniado Galleries"
Nicolae Ene’s work immediately spoke to me. It stands out in a vast world of millions of painters. Bringing together two worlds chaos and tranquility in what seems to be an effortless almost Immediate union of color and draftsmanship that almost hypnotizes the viewer, capturing the eye, the mind and the imagination.
I am pleased to have the opportunity to bring you a somewhat intimate look into the work and life of this artist.

TNYO: Nicolae, I have had the great pleasure of experiencing your work at Max Laniado's Galleries" and on his website online https://www.laniado-finearts.com/ene.html - Please tell me how you ended up showing your work with Max ?
Nicolae: Thank you so much.
I was pleased to have met Max Laniado in 2014 when he visited my studio in New Jersey
to simply deliver a gift from my sister in Paris.
A fascinating conversation with Max about art lead to the topic of my own work which he informed me needed to be shared. Max gave me the opportunity to do just that by inviting me to show at his galleries in the New York, and in Europe.
TNYO: In your bio / statement, it says you have travelled extensively, can you tell us about some of your travels and how they have integrated themselves into your work?
Nicolae: I was a young boy. My travels filled and astonished my senses.
Within seven years I flew from the lush green valley of my grandmother's farm in Romania to the ancient desert dunes of North Africa to Europe's art filled cities and eventually landing in the vast tapestry that is the United States.
It all so effortlessly blended together. All so different and all so the similar. People, places, art, and nature.
I realized that the boundaries I crossed seemed not to exist. It was all one wondrous event. The world vibrated around me with perfect harmonious beauty. My art follows this vibration. It's a rhythm that all things follow. That I follow.
TNYO: Do you travel without leaving the house?
Nicolae: My mind seems to take me on endless journeys.
TNYO: Where is one of your favorite destinations of the mind?
Nicolae:. There is one that fascinates me the most. One place I try to reach more often than any other place in my mind. I can only describe it as being in the middle of a kaleidoscopic storm of fragmented visually rich information. I try to bring back as much of that world as I can in my art.
TNYO: Sometimes when I look at your work I feel like I am looking at a magical map’ is this intentionally part of your composition or is it just my opinion?
Nicolae: For quite some time now my work has focused on the presence of boundaries. Boundaries that flow effortlessly throughout the entire journey of my work. It is not my intention to express conventional maps though my work does present the viewer with a place to explore.
TNYO: Are you married or single?
Nicolae: Thank you so much.

Nicolae: No, I am not yet married.
TNYO: What is your take on mankind, the female, human nature, and how and if
any of these ideas tie into your future work?
Nicolae: Humanity is a most interesting creature. Beautiful and ugly.
Full of so much potential and flawed so perfectly.
I have such great hopes for it.
Humanity is the universe's exploration into consciousness. The female is the nurturing creator. She is Nature embodied.
An infinitely powerful force placed so beautifully in the body of a human. Females have shown me the most admirable qualities of human nature. These qualities are what have given me such hope for humanity.
The boundaries that bind us all together is a major theme for many of my works.
I hope to push these boundaries through new journeys of exploration.
TNYO: Why do you paint?
Nicolae: I paint to create meditative journeys for myself and others. I have an overwhelming need to manifest, through painting, a world that presents itself to me through inner and outer exploration.
TNYO: If you were not an artist what would you be?

Nicolae: I would love to be a musician.
Though I possess no musical talent, I have always admired musical creation and the transcendent nature of music.
TNYO: How Important is love kindness and empathy to you?
Nicolae: I find kindness and empathy to be the most endearing parts of human nature. They nourish the mind and soul.
TNYO: Where are you from Nicolae?
Nicolae: I was born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1977. My parents moved to America when I was 7. I became an American citizen, and then lived all my life in the New York Metropolitan area.
TNYO: Do you believe in god and religion?
Nicolae: I believe in humanity's intrinsic spiritual nature.
TNYO: Do your religious beliefs and family ties affect your work or does your work transcend these ideas?
Nicolae: My own spiritual nature and family will always be important to my work. I have learned so much from both.
TNYO: Who are some of your favorite artists?
Nicolae: Georges Braque, Piet Mondrian, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, Jean Dubuffet, Anselm Kieffer, and Julie Mehretu are just a few of my favorite artists.
TNYO: Do you agree with notions, schools and patterns of thought, categories and names that describe art?
Nicolae: For me, art is fluid. Artists will create what moves them with or without categories. Yet, humans are a social creatures and schools of thought still seem to inform our lives on so many levels. We are followers and leaders. I believe that there is room for both to enrich art.
TNYO: Can you tell us a little about your process in the execution of a painting from start to finish?
Nicolae: I start with a smooth wood panel surface. A meditative state provides me with an abstract idea and image.
Using spreader tools made of silicone and/or metal, I apply thick layers of paint to create a quick initial painting.
This under painting contributes and informs the following painting that I create directly on top of the first. I repeat this process as many times as necessary. Each layer is given a polish. Allowing for the under painting to show through in certain areas of my choosing. This too is repeated until I have achieved what I feel is a balance.
The balance must speak to me close up and from a distance. Using small technical pens, I begin a detailed process of black mark making directly on top of the paint. This process is directly informed by the painting and the meditative state that I bring myself to. No detail is spared. A painting is finished when my meditative journey arrives at a balance that insists it is complete. The process is fluid and presents itself as an effortless journey.
TNYO: Does music play a part in your life and your work?
Nicolae: Yes. Music moves me in so many ways. It is a driving force I cannot ignore. It's just as important as painting to me. The two actually go together. They seem to inform each other. After all, painting is a visual symphony.
TNYO: Can you choose a song for readers to listen to?
Nicolae: Dave Brubeck -- Stardust
