Title: Mercurial Tide, Size (h w d): 24 x 60 x 2.5 in,Medium: encaustic and oil on panel

Artist’s Statement

I tend to look at the world through a scientific lens - filtering keen analysis and exploratory thoughts. And I am looking at our planetary universe on both a macro/micro level voraciously taking in the kinds of information that allow humans to sustain life and coexist on planet earth. I bring these technological, and sometimes, philosophical concepts into the studio and begin my experimental techniques to create an art form that illustrates the mysteries of the universe and the drastic effects of climate change. I am also constantly thinking and reflecting on my art with a painter's eye - relying on my background as a painter and sheer love of materials, color and structural composition.

The paintings I make are integrations of elements of abstract gestures combined with fragments derived from the natural world. I tend to lean towards art that is less direct in its missive - existing somewhere in between non-objective and narrative.

One does not need to hit the viewer hard with meaning. I believe that art can speak for itself and embody
a powerful message while captivating the eye.

These are harsh and often frightening topics that I emphasize in my work but what I have discovered, in my research of realtime - planetary imagery and statistical data, is the stunning and sheer beauty of science that scholars are putting forth. From the visual data of the accelerating changes in glacial and oceanic geologies to the organisms that plague humanity. This information befalling our planet is truly fascinating to me, and continues to drive my practice - spurring, in me, a sense of creative urgency to capture everything and also try and raise awareness.

I spend just as much time on the physical process. There are multi-layers of applied color and textured media - optical clues and markers that will hopefully - reveal to the viewer the bits of recoded information and visual data that is often unnoticed by the lay person and unseen by the naked eye. I want to make tangible the intense planetary research over the past nine year period that I have been working on this series.

Our earth planet is changing at a rapid pace. It is evident in the various pandemics and increasing climate disasters that we are experiencing around the globe. There is much social unrest as a result and yet with astonishing technological advancements we have a greater awareness. I want my art to foster this awareness.

The Challenges and Rewards of Teaching Encaustic Painting

These days I am more selective about how often I take time away from my studio practice to teach, but it important to me that I continue to share the love of this ancient painting technique with the world. Teaching encaustic painting is a unique and rewarding experience that allows me to share me passion and knowledge with others. Encaustic offers a plethora of creative possibilities.

Ice Storm Series Made in Mexico
This small series was inspired by photos from my window of a recent ice storm and the new variety of colors I now see every day from my home on the North Coast of Oregon in Astoria. I created these prints while teaching in Guanajuato, Mexico. Each are 10” x 10” and printed on 14” x 11” sheets of Evolon or Encaustiflex - a soft yet pliable microfiber ideal for collagraph printing.
