Reverence is an attitude by which one responds to reality as a whole. It is more than the typical religious gestalt of revering a religious ideology, saintly being, or holy relic. Reverence goes way beyond that. It is a sacred emotion that flows through everything in our existence as spiritual beings. In this way of thinking and seeing, Reverence is the appropriate term to define an artist's visual memes to produce a work of art. Philosopher Alice Von Hilderbrand considered Reverence the "mother of all virtues."
In Reverence, one sees all things in life as beautiful, which is where my desire to paint unusual and out-of-ordinary subjects manifests deeper than just seeing the ugliness and the mundane. I am constantly asked about the subject matter I paint. I think about the question, and in my mind, I say, 'Why not?
When I see a typical trash bin on the street, I see a story and its purpose. Painting a historical location much older than I have been alive is awe-inspiring. The ubiquitous burger, the fearless rodeo cowboy, the baseball player, the heroic soldier, the construction worker, and the ever-present road crew all should be revered for what they represent.
Gold leaf is the color of extravagance, wealth, riches, and excess, which exerts a hypnotic attraction and evokes a very celestial, reverent feeling toward the serenity of the subject.
I was inspired to utilize gold leaf after seeing the biopic film Klimt. In the movie, Klimt (John Malkovich) is working on the "Adele Bloch-Bauer" portrait; he applies gold leaf to the painting in the scene. Later, while visiting the Timken Museum in Balboa Park, I viewed the collection of Russian Icons on wood panels. The Reverence and visceral experience I felt from the luminance of these traditional Icon works inspired me to recreate this feeling in my work. As I continue developing gilding techniques, I often refer to these works for inspiration. In art, gilding techniques are considered merely decorative art.
The painters of nature all revere the world through their work. This honor also can be in a typical still life of simple objects that mean something and hold a place of Reverence. It has been said that we must abandon arrogance and stand in awe. With these works, I explore the things I hold in awe, experiences I have had, and visions from an artist's mind. What do you hold in Reverence?

Duke Windsor,
American Painter, b. 1960
Birthplace: Texarkana, Texas
Studio: Mt. Helix, Southern California
My name is Duke Windsor. I hail from Texarkana, Texas. I served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a radio operator, combat illustrator, and drill instructor. In the military, I was assigned to Combat Illustrator (Graphic Specialist) tasks as a member of the training support branch, which oversees all graphic design and illustration functions. We supported the base with all print copies, slides, illustrations, and instructional materials. When assigned to Drill Instructor duties, I underwent eight weeks of Drill Instructor's school to learn the method of training recruits about military history, tactics, first-aide, map reading, physical fitness, and Close Order Drill. The role of Drill Instructor taught me how to supervise recruits, create training schedules and lesson plans, and organize and prepare young recruits to succeed and graduate as United States Marines within 12 weeks.
After leaving the service, I was a freelance illustrator and amateur rodeo cowboy. I subsequently studied classical voice at San Diego State University and performed professionally with the San Diego Opera Chorus. Windsor holds the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt in Kempo martial arts, and he continues to be an active singer-songwriter, guitar player, and solo performer in my spare time.
I have over 15 years of museum industry experience working as an installer, project foreman, project manager, and even director of the exhibition department. My project management duties included planning and implementing manufacturing, shipping, and installation production schedules. I have managed installation timelines with a museum exhibition and event schedule and interviewed and hired numerous exhibition preparators over many years. I have worked for the San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Man, San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego History Center, and Mingei International Museum. Windsor served seven years as the founding Director of Exhibits at the USS Midway Museum.
During this time in the museum field, I utilized critical thinking and strategic solutions to many problems during my career. For example, when a traveling exhibit was too large to be brought into the museum's loading area, I suggested the best way was to have the exterior curtain walls removed and the exhibit component into the museum in an innovative way. The idea was discussed, analyzed, and finally approved; glazer was contracted, and the exhibition installation was back on track.
As a director of the exhibition, I served eight years as the founding Director of Exhibits of the Naval Ship Museum serving over one million visitors annually. I ranked #1 among San Diego attractions on Trip Advisor.com. I developed the department, planned, and created all exhibits, including interactive and multi-lingual displays providing a multi-faceted visitor experience, maintained a staff of 6 full-time employees and 12 volunteers,
Created the Art Department and developed a vision and strategy for integrated exhibit displays and new wayfinding methodologies
I am CAD Design Engineering Manager at Full Swing Golf Simulators, headquartered in Carlsbad, California.
My role is to ensure the company's success.
I currently oversee 10 CAD Engineers creating the complex interior concepts for installing complex golf simulator products, utilizing advanced skills in computer-aided 3-D Engineering software.
My role as a leader is to maintain motivation, coach, train on new methodologies, and conduct annual performance reviews of the staff.
In my off times, I am a professional artist. As an art professional, I have taught art at many venues, including the San Diego Museum of Art and the Athenaeum, and he is currently an instructor of drawing and painting at Arton30th Street; he also offers a wide range of artist development workshops throughout San Diego County and is held in private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.
My art work is in several museum collections, including the University of Maryland, the David C. Driskell Center, The Oceanside Museum of Art, and the San Diego History Center. Sparks Gallery in downtown San Diego represents Duke exclusively in Southern California as well as the University of Maryland, and the San Diego History Center.
