Artists Bio & Statement
Doug is a contemporary Impressioist landscape and seascape painter with a focus working in oils and
pastels and has taught painting at colleges, and various art centers for the past 35 years.
Doug was born in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1945, and shortly thereafter, as a result of his father's work,
Doug's family moved to Milwaukee. So, being raised in Milwaukee Doug's fondest memories revolved around the city parks, and especially Lake Michigan, where he grew fascinated by the movement of waves and water and the mysterious fog banks that hung over that majestic lake.
Doug's grandparents, often spent extended amounts of time in Europe as a result of his grandfathers work. During that time, they collected several large notable impressionist landscape paintings.
When Doug was eight or nine he remembered the magic of those paintings and studied their color and structure
over and over. Doug started painting sometime around the age of ten or twelve, by copying some of the great
impressionist masters.
In 1968, Doug enrolled in the studio arts department at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, and
started his studiies with his major professor, Adoph Rosenblatt. Adolph was a graduate of Yale
University, and was an understudy of the nationally known painter Joseph Albers. Doug's paintings continue to be a reflection of Adolphs teachings.
In 1973, Doug received a Master of Science Degree in Studio Art.

From 1974 through 1978, Doug was adjunct faculty at Triton College and the College of
DuPage, both located near Chicago, Illinois, but Doug later stated " The call of the north had me in its
grip." Doug moved to Minnesota in 1979, and most of his recent paintings over the past few years have been
inspired by Minnesota's beautiful regional and state parks and of course Lake Superior.
During the mid 1980s, Doug had cabin for few years on Lake Kabetogama, in Voyageurs National Park,
located in the boundry waters of northern Minnesota. He now lives in the immediate area of the
Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Doug stated, " Now I have an ever expanding
experience from some of Wisonsin's and Minnesota's most beautiful areas that are reflected in my
landscapes and seascapes. "
Doug has always drawn a parallel between painting and music.
Doug stated, "Along with the beautiy of nature, I am a great lover of music, serene and yet moving music
has been a profound inspirational source. For me, music not only opens the window to creative thought,
music introduces us to our soul, and like painting, opens us to the rhythms of life."
Doug continued, " The Universe and all of nature, including ourselves, is encapsulated in a wonderous
mystery. Great music, and my time spent painting has given me the opportunity to take a peek into that
mystery." " The only thing you will ever need to know about Great Music, and Great Art, is that when you hear it, or
see it, you will feel an ever so soft tugging at your Heart and Soul."

Sometimes, when looking over a large expanse of water, if the water is flat, a reflection of light and clouds will appear but may be somewhat vague. It was my intent in this painting, to be open and use more expression with the idea of reflection; and although the painting is, in many ways an abstraction, for me it was an inviting thought. to be able to see the depth of the lake as it peaked through the reflection of clouds and sunlight, playing across the surface of the water.

Inspiration is a very illusive thing. Sometimes it is at your fingertips and then just as quickly, gone; waiting for it could mean a very long wait. So what then? Well, if you like to paint, you just find a way to paint. In my teen years, I was fascinated by the impressionist masters but had no idea about painting or how to paint but was so intrigued by the beauty of the work, I just found paint and brushes and started copying masterworks. But I didn't copy just anything. The painting had to have a certain feeling I couldn't find anywhere else but in painting.
And so the exploration continues in the very same way but many years later. And, once in awhile inspiration will be back at your fingertips and something beautiful and unique will happen, but it is all in the study of painting in between inspiration that gets you there.
And just like musicians, it is just fine to play others music. It is an important learning process.

Certain types of music have always been an inspiration and influence in my work, especially classic piano, certain choral works and what some refer to as New Age. For me, music opens the window of spiritual and creative thought.
For a long time, I was intrigued by the idea of a full orchestra and choir composed of clay figures and full sound accompanyment. With the use of speakers, located on each side of the stage there happened a very peculiar, magical and almost animated illusion. I started the building process sometime in 1974 and finished the piece sometime in 1977. The structure consisted of 56 orchestral pieces and 141 choral members. The view above is but a segment of the total structure. Full photographs have not been located. The actual dimension of the stage was approximately 3 ft. high X 8 ft. in width X 12 ft. in depth
