Life Is Good! ‐ Pastel ‐ Sanded Paper ‐ 26 x 20 ‐ Not For Sale

Moving to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, with my husband was a life changing experience. I began taking classes with pastel portrait and figure painter, Karl Foster, at the Art Center School & Galleries and eventually was asked to teach pastel painting classes. I began to show my work, do commissions, give private lessons, and going to annual workshops given by internationally renowned portrait artists, including, but not limited to, Daniel E. Greene, Wende Caporale, Christine Swann, and Alain Picard. I have always found gold nuggets from each instructor that I could incorporate into my own works of art.  My art is about capturing the reality of life in such a way that the color and precision draw you, the viewer, into my artwork and give you the same enjoyment and excitement it gives me. Creating art IS my sweet spot in life and I am so happy to be here!

I ACCEPT COMMISSIONS, creating pastel portraits from life and/or from photographs. I work closely with my clients, listening to your thoughts and wishes. Together we will collaborate to give you the painting your heart desires.

All About Pastels

The fine true Pastels are pure pigment, very rich in color, the same pigment used in other fine art paints, such as oil and watercolor. The pigment is ground into a paste with a small amount of binder and then rolled into sticks. They should not be confused with colored chalk, which is quite unsuitable for fine art drawing and painting. Pastels have extreme longevity when created on a conservation ground and properly framed.
There are pastel paintings in the national galleries that were created in the sixteenth century
and their colors are as bright and vivid as the day they were painted.

Pastels are a versatile medium and there are many different ways of using them. There is some confusion when we speak of "pastel painting" because pastel, as a dry medium, often tends to be thought of as a drawing tool. But due to the pastels capabilities, one can use a painterly approach, building layers of pigment, often giving it the look similiar to oil. There are many fine manufacturers of pastels, however my favorites are NuPastels of the hard; Rembrandt, Sennelier, Schmincke and Terry Ludwig pastels of the soft and also the CarbOthello pencils. I generally use all of the above when I create a  pastel painting. I paint only on archival, museum quality papers or boards, many of which come in a variety of colors.

All of my pastel paintings begin with a simple but accurate charcoal drawing. Then pastel is applied, with combinations of color mixing done directly on the painting surface with the sticks of pigment. I will sometimes use blending tools, however usually my fingers and the pastel sticks alone are my best means of blending. Keeping it simple at first, I begin to establish the middle and dark values and finally the lights.
Layers of pastel are added, moving from big and simple shapes to smaller and
more complex refining stages, until most or all of my ground is completely covered, giving my work a painterly look.

If shipment of your artwork is necessary, it will be sent unframed,  flat and covered with a sheet of glassine paper for protection, enclosed between solid packing materials. I personally prepare the painting for shipment and then UPS boxes it up according to their specifications. The painting is insured, and includes directions for opening.

Your pastel painting will then need to be professionally conservation framed by a professional framer in your locality. I offer custom conservation matting and framing for local purchases and local commission clients who are able to physically pick up their framed artwork.

If you would like to inquire about a custom portrait painting commission, please contact me via the "Contact the Artist" link in the navigation bar,
