Professional Artist
Tymarc Art Studio is located near Cremona Alberta in the beautiful rolling hills.
Diane’s education in art began at an early age.
“When I was very young I went to the Calgary Children’s Hospital for ‘eye therapy’ for a lazy eye. It happened to be tracing pictures using progressively heavier tracing paper so that my eye would have to work harder all the time. I soon really enjoyed the drawing and got really good at it. And so it began…
My school notes of course were always very well illustrated, not always to the approval of the teachers. Then in high school a wonderful teacher, Mr. Wenzel, provided the encouragement that I needed to make art my future. He actually got me started into sculpture and I loved it…even though it did blow up in the kiln. Although life would have other plans for a while, art was always stuck in my mind as a goal.”
When Bob and Diane met, their first date was a visit to Gina McDougall Cohoes’ place to look at a horse. Bob bought the horse and a lifelong friendship began with Gina.
“At the time Gina was doing her third bronze and I was totally fascinated. She offered to ‘coach me’ and even though Bob and I married and moved to Saskatchewan we kept in touch with her. When we did visit Alberta, I brought her whatever sculpture I was working on and she would help me re-work it.”
Those few lessons with her remain the foundation on which Diane’s career was built. Other artists have influenced her work over the years but Diane still maintains life is the best teacher.
Now settled near Cremona, Alberta, Bob and Diane along with their two daughters and two granddaughters raise purebred Simmental cattle. She uses the day to day happenings as subject matter for many of her sculptures and paintings.
“I think that is why people can relate to my work on a more personal level. They have been there and done that.”
Diane is a gifted sculptor, painter, and instructor. Her experiences in her farming life greatly enhance the authenticity of her images. They are created with knowledge and experience behind each and every one.
Diane believes in really seeing what is around you. From the smallest water droplet on a leaf or blade of grass to the vast wonders of a sunset, there is so much to take in if you really look. A favorite saying of hers is…
Those with eyes can see….Those with eyes open can experience the wonder within.
Experience is the best teacher. Some of the places Diane has traveled have offered tremendous opportunities to expand her abilities.
“Italy was worldly of course with all the fantastic works of art. The time spent there studying the work of the Masters was amazing. I can understand a bit more about what prompted and influenced those artists.”
Other trips to Wales and England further fascinated her artistic curiosity.
“Wales is where my ancestors came from and it is where I got the name for my studio. Tymarc is the name of the Davies family home in Wales and means ‘marked (or visible) house’ in Welsh. It is still lived in today by the Davies Family.”
Many students have come through the studio classrooms. They were taught all the basics of drawing, color, and combining the two to create their own works of art.
“There were a few students that excelled in their ability to see and they are the ones that will go on and use the lessons that we did. I am happy that I contributed to their love of art. If only to give back some of what I was given so long ago.”
Diane is continually working on new projects in the studio and welcomes visitors.

Interview with Diane M. Anderson
TNYO: Hello Diane it is pleasure to have the opportunity to get to know you, feel free to tell us more about yourself.
Diane M. Anderson: Diane Mae Anderson Born and raised in Calgary Alberta.
A Horse crazy animal lover that also began drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil.
I actually went into eye therapy for a lazy eye and my many months of treatment was to "trace" pictures with ever thickening tracing paper. I got to do art all day! Starting at 4 years old!! Mostly I wanted to draw horses! So a lot of times I just ignored the tracing paper and drew what I wanted to.
I learned very early to ride and look after horses on my aunt and uncles farm just outside of the city. I was in heaven even if it was only cleaning stalls. I met my husband at that farm years later. He was there to tame and train some rather unmanageable horses. I never forget image in my brain is seeing this guy get bucked off over and over but never giving up. I found that amazing.
So of course 1 year later we got married.
We had a wonderful friend by the name of Gina Mcdougal. She got me started in sculpture and I loved it. She would answer my questions about the process of sculpting and of course that started something new for me.
We moved to Saskatchewan and began our new life of farming. I was still drawing and now painting for pleasure so that continued and grew into my obsession with new works. Sculpting was beginning to take over.
I feel that sculpture can be dynamic, aggressive, sweet, emotional, and evoke memories for many people.... each person in a different way.
I love to watch the way different people react to the same sculpture or painting. You can tell they are relating to something in their own life.
For me that is the inspiration to any piece of artwork. It doesn't matter which I create with, painting or bronze, I focus in on the feelings and emotions it portrays. For me it has to be in there to create an emotion for a viewer.
TNYO: What type of materials do work with when painting and sculpting, brand names for your brushes, canvas and sculpting materials?
Diane M. Anderson: The materials I work with when painting are usually acrylic on linen however I do enjoy oils once in a while and again on linen canvas.
I don’t stick to brand names very much. I use many different brushes depending on the material I am working with.
I do however mostly stick to Gamblin and Windsor & Newton oils and Liquitex Professional and Golden Acrylics.
I have a habit of collecting brushes of any kind. Once I find one I really like I will sort of shift to that brand for a while until I am in need of something unique. Then I will shop around and try new names.
TNYO: What inspires you most Diane?
Diane M. Anderson: Inspiration is usually the emotion I feel when coming across a new subject. I feel like if I react in a certain way maybe others will feel that as well and really understand and enjoy my work. It is a great feeling to sell a bronze or painting, but even better if the buyer is invested emotionally in what I have done and want it in their home or office. I sort of feel like my “kid” has a good home now and will be appreciated.
I have had clients phone long after their purchase and ask if I have created another piece of art which relates to what they have purchased. That is really a nice feeling!
TNYO: I noticed you traveled overseas early on in your career. Can you share some of your favorite experiences?
Diane M. Anderson: Yes I have traveled overseas quite a few times. I have family in Wales and England so they were very welcoming and made all my trips wonderful. Wales seems to have taken a piece of my heart. I love it there. After years of researching my family tree, I got to meet many of them and treasure the relationships we still have.
The people are so welcoming and accommodating and of course there is the family part of it there which made it all wonderful. The art there is full of ancient stories and happenings. The ancient buildings and the thought of living in the time of castles and Knights fascinates me.
Things in the London museums were amazing as well. I also loved Italy and all the fantastic art…..and wine!
It was a dream come true to see the art in the Vatican and of course the David. Standing in the church where Michelangelo was buried took my breath away. And so much more!
TNYO: At what point did you begin giving lessons, were they private lessons or did you teach in college or high school?
Diane M. Anderson: I have run “classes” for around 10 years in the studio. It is great to have people come that are so keen about their work and willing to accept guidance and critique of their works. It is a feel good day when I attend a show or sale that includes some of the “students” that have spent time here.
TNYO: What is your favorite creature, animal on the planet?
Diane M. Anderson: Favorite Animal? I love all animals but the dogs and horses I have loved over the years have made special relationships more special! I can’t imagine being without them.
TNYO: Can you tell us your opinion on the business of art?
Diane M. Anderson: The business of art? Wow that’s a big one. The first thing you need is a quality in your art that will be recognized as YOUR work! Then you need a thick skin as people who “comment” on your work can be very hard on someone not ready to take it.So I think DETERMINATION is the word you will need. Learning is one thing but putting your work out there for comments and opinions is one of the hardest things to do.
The ability to take what you need to keep from any comments and then throw away what you don’t is very hard to learn. Opinions are given freely in most shows and classes. Everyone will have them so being able to pick the ones that you can learn from is very important!! Being able to let go of the ones that aren’t helping is very very hard to do! Thinking it through and possibly applying what might help or upgrade your work and then applying it to “Your Way” of creating and marketing your work is a must. If you don’t or cant see the difference between advice and a critical comment, you will be set back in your head. You don’t need self doubt, most artists have enough already.
TNYO: Did you ever consider any other careers?
Diane M. Anderson: I knew very early in life I wanted to be an artist. It was never an issue for me. I was the kid in the classes that drew pictures easily instead of writing nicely and understanding the science behind the projects we were asked to complete.TNYO: Can you share your advice for aspiring artists of all ages and genders?
TNYO: Do you have any advices for up an coming artists students or enthusiasts ?
Diane M Anderson:Advice for those starting??? Be yourself first! That is what will connect you with your abilities no matter the subject of the art.Never give up a chance to learn something new. Attend demonstrations and art shows. Go see worldly art if you can!
Look for interesting subject matter and figure out what is most comfortable to you. You will likely link in to one or two subjects that you relate to. Then study them where ever and whenever you can.
Always be on the look out for a subject you could try, if only as am experiment. There may be an element in there that really hits home for you! Expand on that.
TNYO: Are you currently showing with any Galleries?
Diane M Anderson: At this point I am not showing in galleries. I love going to them but I really like doing shows in person more. I feel like I get a contact with more people and the fact that it is in person is great. I really appreciate people that will tell me what they see in my work even if they feel it is not for them. It is amazing the clients I have connected with over many years of doing shows. You never know who is going to walk into your display or tell their friends about it.
I have found that many corporate people are just enjoying the art at the show but many of them hang on to my cards and brochures for a long time and often end up contacting me for a project or or piece of art down the line.
TNYO: Does art run through your family - are there any family members that show great talent as artists?
Diane M. Anderson: My mom was a really good pastel artist. I have still got some of her work hanging in the house. Her dad worked with wood and produced some amazing furniture and in the later years smaller things for all the grandchildren which of course I still have as well.
TNYO: Do you listen to music when you are making and if so can choose a favorite song for our readers to listen to?
Diane M. Anderson:I actually either listen to audio books while working or my favorite programs on tv. I also at times just play music. I like classical soft music that creates a quiet mood in the room. It is very relaxing.I am enjoying teaching all the more these days. I still have plenty of
Projects to finish including a life size sculpture but it is also a nice break to be surrounded by those keen people that are wanting to always know more. If you want any more info feel free to contact me.
Thank you for the opportunity.
