About Diane

Diane is a mixed media artist, layering together images, designs, and fantasy.  Many artworks are hyper-realistic food sculptures and paintings with collage, adding depth and interest. Her work is whimsical, colorful, and full of realistic details. A signature aspect of her artwork is the unique method of building paintings into 3-dimensional works using paint, hand-carved, layered foam core board, cardboard, found objects, fabric, and resin, to add texture and depth. She often combines paint with collage elements, integrating the paint and collage to form a cohesive, complete whole.  Collage is an assemblage of various small objects and forms, which sometimes include layers of paper, found objects, fabric, string, cardboard, or metal leaf.   Collage enhances clarity, adds a sense of playfulness, vitality, and a surreal aspect to a carefully crafted, realistic painting.  Diane’s paintings are improvisations on realistic images fused onto imaginative themes that are rich with light, color and detail.  Her work weaves together layers of designs, textures and meaning.  Diane often applies layers over layers, sometimes arranging, sometimes disarranging, gathering, surrounding, weaving, removing or embellishing images, and often carving back into them, to find the real, hidden story underneath each painting.    Her techniques with collage mix the boundaries between figure and ground, portrait and landscape, fine art and craft. The result is tactile, bold work that engages process, form, and narrative equally..

Diane Gelman graduated from The Glassell Studio School of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2012.  Diane is also a Registered Dietitian with a master’s degree in Nutrition and had a long, varied career in Food and Nutrition before exploring her artistic soul.  Diane specializes in Food based artwork, combining her passions for food and art. She has had 9 solo shows, earned many commissions, and has received many honors. She was awarded an Individual Artist’s Grant from the City of Houston, 2025 for EAT!! It was a visual feast that featured over 100 Food-based paintings, sculptures and installations.  Other notable accomplishments were a 15' x 30' Mural, "Equity for All," at McGowan Station Apartments, funded by Midtown Houston Arts District, 2021. She created a monumental, authentic Parisian Patisserie (Patisserie Larsen) in a collector's home in 2020, featuring an entire 3-D pastry shop on 5 panels complete with the family's favorite desserts in 3D renderings, topped with a decorative sign, adorned in the font made famous by the Paris Metro system.

Food is a universal subject the world over and is an ideal subject for artwork for everyone to savor.  We all connect with Food. Food is a basic human necessity, but its' significance transcends beyond mere sustenance. Food maps who we are and where we’ve come from. The taste or smell of food is a collective emotion across all nationalities and cultures. Food is a symbol of hospitality, social status, and is a source of joy and celebration. Diane creates Food based artwork that is so real looking, that the viewer often wants to reach right into the piece.. She has invented many techniques to create food-art using basic materials like foam board, paper, paint, glue. She makes use of a pastry bag to apply garnishes and extruded, defined paint applications. Diane creates realistic, lacy vegetable greens by repeatedly tracing paper images of actual greens with a hot glue gun in an inventive transfer technique .  Diane started making giant food during the Pandemic, beginning with a giant ice cream bar, then a donut, then a slice of cake on a platter. Diane likes solving the challenges and obstacles presented when making unique artwork. Her artworks are fully integrated and harmonious, bursting with energy and life.
