I attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. I was graduated in 1969 from the School of Architecture with a Bachelor of Science in the Building Sciences. At Rennselaer, I studied drawing and painting with Walter Plate and sculpture with the kinetic sculptor George Rickey. Through Walter Plate, I secured an apprenticeship with Stephen Robin, a sculptor and furniture maker in Woodstock, New York, where I lived for one year, before moving to East Hampton in 1970. I settled in the Springs where I have since lived.
I began my artistic endeavors as a sculptor carving figurative sculptures in wood and marble, in a range from realistic to abstract. Since 1989, I have concentrated primarily on abstract oil painting, drawing my inspiration from the beauty of the landscapes, seascapes, and the incredible natural light, unique to the east end of Long Island. Besides painting on canvas, my work also includes works on paper using watercolor, gouache, woodcut printing, ink, pen and pencil.
I have shown my work at the Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton, New York, and at the Millennium Gallery, formerly of East Hampton. I have shown at Ashawagh Hall in Springs every year for the past twenty years in various group and solo shows. I was one of the artists featured in the August 2000 issue of Vanity Fair Magazine on artists of the East End, by Bob Colacello and Jonathan Becker. In 2008 and 2009 I have had one man shows at Sylvester & Co. Gallery, Main Street, Amagansett, NY.
All my art starts with a simple drawing. Sometimes it ends with a simple drawing and sometimes the drawing takes on a life of its own and takes me with it to places I have only felt and lets me see them.
