Enjoy the exuberant and joyful performance of Juicy Flute Groovy Jazz Quartet, led by flutist, singer and composer Carolena de la Norte. While paying tribute to the jazz masters and standards, the group focuses on the groove, making it enjoyable and entertaining for all, yet incorporating top-notch musicians with exceptional improvisational skills. Carolena's advanced improvisational abilities are ignited by her dynamic stage presence and an electrifying live performance.
Carolena is also an accomplished classical flautist, having been featured as special guest star in classical concert settings as well as performing in chamber groups and frequent solo flute programs. She also plays the Latin repertoire with a kick-ass vitality.
Starting at age 8, Carolena began playing flute and taking private lessons, then joined in rock and Latin bands at age 14, then furthering her studies at the lauded jazz institute Berklee College of Music in Boston. She then performed with many top Blues musicians including John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins and Son Seals.
Simultaneously she started experimenting with sonic electronic enhancements to her flute, creating a completely new and unique form of ambient and sonic flute music as part of the post-punk band Still Life.
Next came a move to New York City where for 15 years Carolena was firmly ensconced in the music scene, performing jazz, classical,pop, rock, funk, R+B, new age, folk,and alternative musics, training her in virtually all genres of music. It was in NYC that she started two bands - 'Juicy Flute Jazz', and 'Electric Mermaid', an experimental progressive rock project featuring her original compositions. She played with the best musicians in New York including Hiram Bullock [of David Letterman Band. David Sanborn, Brecker Brothers], Cindy Blackman [Lenny Kravitz], Rachel Z. [Peter Gabriel], Bill Foster [Larry Coryell], Rodney Holmes [Santana], and Keith Carlock [Steely Dan], Freddie Bryant and Sheryl Bailey.
Performances included sharing the stage with countless extraordinary musicians and entertainers such as opening slots for Chaka Khan, Earth Wind and Fire and Lauren Hill and George Clinton, as well as being a member of many bands including Reese, Martha Redbone, Cynthia Goddeau, and Jennifer Barrett. Her skills on flute led her to be a first-call musician in NYC until her subsequent move to Los Angeles for 4 years. There she established herself as an in-demand session player and performer, playing with notables such as Daryl Darden and Stanley Butler, and The Jazz Anarchists, led by composer Francis Pinto. The next move has taken Carolena to Bali, where she is engaging in a multi-cultural exchange of music from her native land, sharing her warm, mature, funky and fun sound with the musicians of Indonesia.
Carolena is the recipient of the OOBR award in NYC for her musical score and performance for the play 'Sex Toys and Subways Stories' by Kirsten Ames and performed at the Fringe Festival. She also wrote the musical score for award-winning independent film 'Emily's Song' by director David Capurso.
