Barbara is an established New England mixed media artist working in 2D and 3D. Her art has been purchased over the years for residential and commercial interior spaces. Her work has also been included in many juried gallery exhibitions.
Currently she has been creating and exhibiting temporary outdoor sculptural work with the group Studios Without Walls and The New England Sculptors Association.
An observer of nature and the nature of the human condition, her travels around the world have given her art a new perspective. Now focusing on environmental concerns she hopes her playful sometimes darker vision will give her audience insight and enjoyment.

Albert Einstein once wrote, “Look deep into nature and you will understand everything”. I look at nature and see much symbolism and metaphor for what is happening in the world today. My artwork focuses on the chaos, mystery and whimsey in nature. The whimsey is sometimes dark,
sometimes not but always points to the foibles of human nature. Nature is innately smarter than man. My ever-evolving artwork has become more political and narrative driven and explores some of these ideas and more.
Always interested in utilizing new materials for my mixed media work, I incorporate hard and soft materials such as paper, clay, wire, foam, found objects, natural materials and recently cut aluminum. I am not attracted to abstraction so always work with the human and animal form.
Five years ago I took on a new challenge as a proposal for a temporary outdoor installation through the group Studios Without Walls was accepted and installed for three months along the Riverway in Boston.
Now I divide my time between outdoor installation which can reach a larger audience and
juried national shows at various indoor venues.
I have won sculpture awards at The Concord Art Association, Duxbury Art Museum Complex, Marblehead Art Association National Variations show and the National Association of Women Artists. Residing in Boston for thirty years I have taught workshops in papermaking, 3D paper
and 3D books for children in afterschool programs as well as adults. My work has been included in a number of published books on paper art, collected widely including famed writer Stephen King and commissioned for public venues such as Newton Wellesley Hospital and Boston
Childrens Hospital.

Bio 2024
Barbara Fletcher’s creations from paper and 3D mixed media swim, crawl, and fly
across the walls.
Fletcher sprays, shapes, sculpts and cuts aluminum, clay, paper and other material into creatures and narrative scenes. She hand paints these, creating a colorful, personal vision of nature. With the environment in mind, she often incorporates recycled material, including scrap paper and found metals. One of her sculptures “Trash Mountain” which addresses serious topics: global warming, destruction of our oceans, and the trashing of the planet features a giant metal dragon descending from a mountain of trash.
Humor and an eclectic sensibility are hallmarks of her work.
Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Flemish art and Japanese woodblock prints were all early influences. Growing up on a farm as a child she played and fantasized in the large barns in the back of her house. Working with her hands she assembled special environments for herself and these became her living sculptures. Years later she became a sculptor of paper, creating environments on a larger scale.
Her newest sculptures have grown in size and a number of works have been featured in temporary outdoor installations. The most recent in 2024 with the group Studios Without Walls along the Riverway in Brookline.
Fletcher received her BFA from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts. She has also studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, Mass College of Art, and Maine’s Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
Her work has won numerous awards and she is included in many collections around the country, including an installation in the home of famed writer Stephen King. Now living in Boston for over 25 years, her art has been shown in galleries
and museums including The Duxbury Art Complex, The DeCordova Museum, The
Danforth Museum and a one person show at The Children’s Museum.
